Nostalgia In Vogue
Edited by Eve MacSweeney
Foreword by Anna Wintour
Rizzoli New York 2011

Vogue’s iconic presence in the world of fashion is part of the fabric of American culture. As of 2000, the magazine has published a column titled “Nostalgia,” enlisting a fascinating array of celebrated public figures to choose a photo from the Vogue’s archives, then write about the memory it evokes from the time in their lives when it was first published.

Sixty-three essays by such contributors as Joan Didion, Margaret Arnold, Patti Smith, Edmund White, Karl Lagerfeld, Carly Simon, Manolo Blahnik, Angelica Houston, Joyce Carol Oates and A.M. Homes, paired with images by legendary photographers including Henry Clarke, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Horst P. Horst, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, make this beautiful book a fascinating read and visual delight.

The range of topics is vast, and Nostalgia In Vogue celebrates the often poignant essays that have been engrossing Vogue readers for more than a decade. This is a must-have book for all Vogue enthusiasts.

The Spring 2012 manicures were rock star rebellious in gradation ombré, nearly neon, and checkerboard brights. If you aren’t “with the band,” the look is a sci-fi holographic finish or second skin to modernize your neutrals. Nudes transcend into translucent milky white or clear tips embellished with lattice, sparkle, and gold foiling for a lovely, optically stimulating look.

Here’s the rundown of CND’s 16 looks straight off the runway. Listed by show, lead artist, look and description:

Fashion Week Workout

Getting ready for Fashion Week takes more preparation than juggling invitations and rearranging schedules. Fashion editors, stylists, buyers and press need to be in shape for the week’s  strenuous physical  maneuvers … standing on long lines, running from show to show, sitting in cramped chairs and slinging over-sized totes filled with cameras, iPads, press-kits and assorted goody bags.

I asked certified personal trainer Andre Banks of Synergy Fitness Clubs to recommend a few Fashion Week-worthy exercises that will target our specific activities and improve overall stamina… let the shows begin!

All Photos: Janet Pytowski/VIDCAT

Chair Squats: Strengthen your legs… great for standing on long lines (especially if wearing high-heels!)

Stand in front of a chair with your feet shoulder’s width apart. (1)

Chair Squat (1)

Flexing on the hips and bending the knees, push the butt back and lower your rear towards the chair. Lean forward at the shoulders while keeping the back straight. (2)

Chair Squat (2)

TAKE NOTE! At the bottom of the motion, the knees should not go past the toes if a line was drawn from one to the other. (3)

Chair Squat (3)

Chair Step Up: Get in shape for running from show to show.

Stand in front of your chair with one foot on it. Keep your weight on the heel, and ball of the foot. For balance, lean slightly forward with your back straight and arms in front of you. (1)

Chair Step up (1)

Step up, using the foot that’s on the chair. Keep your other leg slightly bent and not touching the chair. (2)

Seated Dumbbell Press with a Twist: Strengthen your shoulders… carry multiple goody bags with ease!

From a seated position, hold a dumbbell in each hand, with your arms bent and your palms facing you. (1)

Tamara de Lempicka: The Queen of the Modern, Edited by Gioia Mori, Skira, 2011

A cosmopolitan painter and icon of the art deco movement, Tamara de Lempicka created images that became the symbols of. the “crazy” 1920s and 1930s. She was possibly that period’s most brilliant exponent, cultivating her talent and building an image of an elegant and sophisticated woman… the extravagant protagonist of the European high life.

Through scrupulous scientific analysis of 120 paintings and works on paper, this beautiful publication recreates the artistic atmosphere of the time, suggesting unique parallels and comparisons with contemporary works. It also offers us a cross section of the artist’s life
which was filled with glamour and marked by the historical events of the 20th century.

This beautiful book is a must-have for all art deco lovers and highlights the life of one of the most modern women of our time.

International film actress and fashion icon Kate Bosworth lends her talents to the latest commercial in “The Fabric Of My Life” television campaign from Cotton Incorporated.

The commercial features a new version of the familiar tune, with spare orchestration to heighten the ethereal mood of the visuals. Featuring cotton fashions by well-known designers such as Prada, Rodarte and Nina Ricci, the spot showcases the use of cotton in high fashion apparel, as well as the physical and emotional comfort consumers around the world have for the fabric of our lives. The new “The Fabric of My Life” commercial adds a twist to the day-in-the-life theme of the campaign, which was introduced in 2009 with vocalists Miranda Lambert, Jazmine Sullivan, and Zooey Deschanel. In 2010, singers Leona Lewis and Colbie Caillat reinterpreted the familiar song. For the latest campaign, actress Kate Bosworth takes center stage.

The guide features hilarious commentary and illustrations by Miss de la Fressange, as well as photographs of Nine, her daughter. After her modeling career, she collaborated with the Parisian designer Bruno Frisoni to revive the shoe brand Roger Vivier Haute Couture, where she is currently the creative director and brand ambassador.

PARISIAN CHIC: A Style Guide

by Ines de la Fressange with Sophie Gachet

“Dress like a Parisian” may be the title of the first chapter in this enchanting book written by French style icon Ines de la Fressange , but the book really focuses on fashion should be fun… a unique style philosophy enjoyed by Ines throughout the book.

Her personal tips for living with style are gleaned from decades in the fashion industry…  she offers specific pointers on how to dress like a Parisian including how to mix affordable basics with high-fashion luxe items. My favorite saying from Ines is “The secret to great style is to feel good in what you wear.” She also shows her wit when she says “Nothing looks worse than a girl tottering about on unimaginable heels! The key to sex appeal is a feline walk, not a precarious wobble.”

Ines identifies a man’s blazer, a trench coat, a navy sweater, a tank top, a little black dress jeans and a leather jacket as the “Magnificent Seven” bedrock of any Parisian wardrobe. Her smart and funny do’s and don’ts are accompanied by her own drawings and fashion photography.

This book is a must-have for all lovers of Parisian style and as a special treat Ines shares her favorite shops and resources for all things chic in Paris. A great travel companion for your next trip to the city of style!

Cristóbal Balenciaga, Philippe Venet, Hubert de Givenchy:

Grand Traditions in French Couture by Christiane de Nicolay-Mazery,

Flammarion, 2011

Bringing together the history of an ancestral chateau, the legends of three celebrated designers and the beauty of the gowns they created, Cristobal Balenciaga , Philippe Venet, Hubert De Givenchy is a treasure trove of history, fashion, interior design and beauty. The gowns of these three famous designers are displayed to praise their legendary designs and their impact on haute couture today.

Balenciaga’s desire to be a designer from a young age is described… leading up to his success creating the most beautiful dresses for the most famous women of his time. His exceptional tailoring and creative techniques were studied world-wide. Venet is known for his youthful and romantic gowns. His designs, including the “kite” coats of the 60s were creative and colorful. Givenchy opened his own fashion house in Paris at only twenty-four years old. His high-quality fabrics, simple shapes, classic lines and flowing designs set his styles apart from other designers of his day and gained prominence for the dresses he designed for Audrey Hepburn for Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

This beautiful hardcover book with 150 color illustrations is a must-have for all fashion enthusiasts.

Philippe Venet has a talent for color. In Haroué’s landscape garden, designed by Cyndie Simon, old roses, peonies, and anemones harmonize with plain or printed organza dresses. Matthew Williamson by Colin McDowell, Rizzoli 2010

Matthew Williamson was born in Manchester, one of the U.K.’s great industrial cities, appropriately built on the production of cotton. “A gray city in gray country” is how Williamson describes his hometown… his stark childhood surroundings are what instilled in him a strong craving and appreciation for vibrant colors and and free-flowing fabrics.

This lavishly illustrated monograph celebrates Williamson’s color-drenched creations embellished with exquisite embroidery and beading. Photographs of Williamson’s textile designs, celebrity fashion shoots and mood boards, sketches and scrapbooks reveal his inspirations and influences.

A personal and reflective introduction by the designer is followed by fashion historian Colin McDowell’s revealing text, providing a historical context to the editorial pages highlighting Williamson’s collections. Each chapter opens with a personal note from industry style-setters and key players on the success of the brand. Fashion-icon Sienna Miller writes ” When I step into one of Matthew’s dresses I feel like I am stepping into his world, which is colorful, ethereal and dreamlike.”

This book is a must-have for free-spirited, fashion forward lovers of fashion and anyone interested in fashion design and contemporary fashion culture.

ANNE BOWEN BRIDAL COLLECTION: Of The Gods

Anne Bowen Bridal Spring 2011

The ANNE BOWEN BRIDAL fashion show was presented on October 17  at the Eventi Hotel, NYC. The collection  is inspired by Welsh Goddesses, and Anne Bowen titled it “Of The Gods”  to represent the ethereal quality of the gowns.

Layers upon layers of tulle, silk organza and silk satin chiffon created a celestial feeling.  Welsh Goddess names like Tamara, Goddess of Rivers, Serona, Goddess of Healing and Don, Goddess of the Heavens exuded the sheer lightness of the collection.  The silhouettes became an abstract study of shape and texture creating the essence and image of a modern goddess.

The hair and makeup Anne Bowen chose for the runway is a dark, dramatic eye of charred brown mixed with Tyrian Purple otherwise known as Imperial Purple and a soft, blush lip.  Pitch from Warren Tricomi Salon created smooth, unfettered hair adding a retro-modern touch of glamour and bringing focus to eyes and skin.

The flowers for the show were soft, over-sized white garden roses by Mela Rosa who designed the bouquets as well using Gardenias, the favorite flower of Anne Bowen’s mother.

© Jerry Schatzberg, WOMEN THEN: Photographs 1954-1969, Rizzoli New York, 2010.

Following Jerry Schatzberg’s best-selling 2008 monograph titles Paris 1962, this beautiful book, designed by Ruth Ansel, captures the romance and glamour of women in the 1950s and 1960s. A stylish mix of fashion and portraiture, Women Then includes portraits of timeless beauties including Nico, Faye Dunaway, Edie Sedgwick, Sharon Tate and Catherine Deneuve, as well as some of Schatzberg’s favorite models including Carmen Dell’Orefice, Peggy Moffit and Anne St. Marie who was the inspiration for Schatzberg’s first film “Puzzle of a Downfall Child.”

With this body of work Schatzberg preserves the sophisticated and very adult elegance and beauty of women in the now popular “Mad Men” period. “Jerry Schatzberg wants us to see “women then”- their strength, beauty, desires and yes, their clothes, and has given us a collective female portrait of the times.” – Gail Buckland, from the Preface.

A Must-Have book for all followers of female portraiture throughout the ages.

GRETA GARBO: THE MYSTERY OF STYLE
By Stefania Ricci
Essay by Gray Horan
Skira, 2010

©GRETA GARBO: THE MYSTERY OF STYLE by Stefania Ricci, Skira, 2010

Greta Garbo was one of the most elusive public figures of the twentieth century, shunning the media and keeping a wide gap between herself and her fans. Her mystique captured the world’s attention, and the press
continues to look for glimpses into her very private personal life. This comprehensive book offers a glimpse of Garbo’s style through never-before-published photographs of the timeless star’s wardrobe, comprised of comfortable, practical pieces with minimal frills, sewn with quality fabrics. Her dresses, suits, and impeccably tailored coats—slightly masculine in their cut—and the indispensable accessories (shoes, bags, glasses, foulards) created an elegant and comfortable style that has often been, and no doubt will continue to be, imitated by chic women the world over.

GRETA GARBO is edited by Stefania Ricci, the Director of Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence. Garbo was a Ferragamo client from the 1920s until her death, and the house designed hundreds of hand-made shoes and sandals exclusively for her; some classical, others futuristic, and most of them shown here for the first time. Also included are essays by Garbo’s great niece, Gray Horan, well known-film critic, Gianni Canova, and Italian fashion journalist, Giusi Ferré. A catalog of Garbo’s personal wardrobe provided by her living heirs, biographical notes, her filmography, and a stunning collection of iconic portraits by celebrated photographers completes this must-have gorgeous volume… the perfect library addition for designers, students of style and a special treat for all Garbo fans!

Designers are inspired by the world around them. Their designs usually reflect a personal interpretation of whatever catches their eye while traveling around the world or around the corner.

Checkout the inspiration and looks for these four New York fashion designers for spring 2011… we’ll be watching their shows during Fashion Week to see the final results!

Rebecca Taylor

The Rebecca Taylor Spring 2011 Collection girl is the modern juxtaposition between her bohemian roots and her love of what is slick and urban. Distressed, belted trench coats in bright colors are the perfect pairing with Rebecca’s signature silk printed dresses. Perforated eyelet pieces are combined with sleek scalloped-edge leather jackets to provide a worn, downtown look that still remains elegant. Kelly Green, Highlighter Yellow, and Equestrian Orange are the perfect complement to earthy neutrals, integrating her love of both the countryside and the city. Spring 2011 brings us all back to fresh, feel good, American fashion.

Rebecca Taylor

Yoana Baraschi

The Spring 2011 Collection is inspired by a woman fierce in spirit, yet utterly feminine, evoking the sensual confidence of a 70’s Romy Schneider or Gena Rowlands in John Cassavetes films.  A mixture of 70’s and 90’s sportswear classics are reinvented with a modern touch of graphic prints, timeless florals and animal prints.  A color palette that includes sun-kissed shades of coral, lemon, lavender and aqua, complimented by gentle urban grays and weathered natural whites contrasted by navy are found on the season’s key silhouettes.

Yoana Baraschi

Kaelen

“I went Tornado chasing last year, and was inspired by the weather itself, the colors, the momentous shift from calm to crazed that happens in a split second. I wanted to create something that was equally modern and timeless with an element of chaos,” designer Kaelen Farncombe.

Kaelen

Tracy Reese

“Spring 2011 evokes effortlessly chic dressing, redefining favorite silhouettes and offering women simple yet sexy looks with a classic TR touch. Sultry elements animate a minimalist approach, like this nude silk blouse and pleat pocket flare pant, creating a sleek, monochromatic moment of confidence and sensuality,” designer Tracy Reese.

This beautiful book blends historical, scientific and cultural information in a comprehensive work that recounts the fascinating story and interesting facts about pearls. My favorite tidbit… what do all pearls have in common? They don’t have sharp edges.

A must-have for all gem enthusiasts, Pearls features the rich history of the gem including the fascinating legacy surrounding Kokichi Mikimoto and Coco Chanel.

These necklaces belonging to Hussain Alfardan are the very essence of the beauty of the natural pearl. Perfectly spherical and with a superb orient, this quality of pearl catches the light and interacts with light into very subtle pastel tints. Hussain Alfardan Collection, Qatar. © Hubert Bari

Tiara commissioned from Chaumet, Paris, in 1897 by the Marquis de Keroüartz for his wife-to-be Louise d’Andigné, on the occasion of their marriage the same year. It is characterised by seven large baroque pearls that sprout from a composition of diamonds mounted on silver and gold. The tiara can be converted into a necklace. Fashion Windows Chanel: Music icons and Fashion’s inspiration

The Chanel Fashion show for Fall 2010 in Paris donned models wearing a heart-shaped hairdo with a bow accessory.. similar to the Lady Gaga hairstyle.

Lady Gaga’s bow was originally hand made by herself out of hair extensions wrapped into a bow and bobby pinned to her head.

Music icon, style, fashion…It is clear how influential a pop music singer’s style has become to influence fashion and beauty.

Fashion has often been influenced by famous music artists and designer collaborations creating a synergy between Music and Fashion. In the 90′s Madonna collaborated with Jean Paul Gauthier for the very famous cone-shaped bra.

Iconic male singers often run into this trend too, when creating their own fashion label. Hip hop star Jay-Z co-founded a clothing line named Rocawear. Producer and singer Pharrell Williams collaborated with Louis Vuitton for jewelry line Blason and built Billionnaire Boys Club (BBC), a fashion venture between the singer and established Japanese fashion designer Nigo. Pharrell has also helped to bring Nigo’s brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE) to the front of urban culture. As a result, Nigo has helped Pharrell to fulfill his dream of having his own fashion label.

It’s seems to be an exchange of inspiration and creativity between both fields, and stylish singers become the ambassadors of the fashion labels.

As a new generation of singer/songwritter, Lady Gaga works as an artist and a fellow fashion icon. Her hair bow seems to have inspired more than just fans.

Does Karl Lagerfeld have a new source of creativity? Or is Lady Gaga a Chanel ambassador?

Whatever the case, one can’t help but appreciate the creativity behind the iconic singers.

Spotted on the runways (Hervé Leger and Derek Lam) for spring 2010, flower prints have now invaded the shop windows in Soho, New York… Betsey Johnson and Prada’s store windows featured floral print tops and dresses.

Flowers are definitely a good touch to illustrate the sunshine of the east cost and a good remedy for the ambient gloom on hazy days.

Add vibrant floral prints to your wardrobe and show some flower power for rest of this summer!
